SRK… the new replacement for Pepsodent's Dhisshum Dhisshum!!!

No! I am not SRK fan!!!
I hate the super romantic mushy-gooey avatar of this guy in numerous movies. But… I am super impressed with the new Pepsodent ad. He does it so good that I can’t imagine anyone else who could have done a better job. He does it with absolute ease and so effortlessly… being just the charming person he is.
The ad is based on a Billion dollar question every parent must have had. How do I make my kid brush his teeth by himself every night?
The ad features a kid in front of mirror.. Slightly disappointed about having to brush his teeth… and Dhan Ta Dannn.. Enters the super Dad SRK.. Charms the kid and audience with a story about how Pepsodent  will help the kid protect his teeth.  And the kid starts brushing his teeth with full on enthusiasm. The ad has different flavors to it and is shot with 3 such stories where Sharukh explains the kido a story each time and makes him brush… induces fear of going toothless like his friend… goes to extraordinary length as to dress up as Ravan and manages to Charm the hell out of you.
Now what purpose does this ad serve? It’s not a regular toothpaste ad (neither was “kyaa aapke toothepaste me namak hai” ads.. but let’s not discuss their creepiness here) where a hot chick would fall for a guys fresh breath(I wish it would be true... hunhh!), neither does it show the animated- “kitaanuon se lade (small miniature agent s killing kitanoos hidden in between teeth), roke masudon ke sadan(gums getting tight against the teeth automatically)” videos or a cute couple flashing their teeth and smiling till their ear for a fat paycheck, and thank god no signature dhisshum dhisshum of Pepsodent ad.

It’s an ad which plays with the feeling a father or mother goes trough when they have to convince the kid that he/she has to brush before going to sleep. And SRK super successfully convinces the kid in ad and the parents who are watching this ad that this is the toothpaste for them. The parents are the target audience for this ad. The ad strongly gambles upon thousands of upper middleclass, middleclass households in rising and shining India has parents who are concerned about their kid’s teeth and will spend some extra bucks for the toothpaste that will prevent decay and other problems.

Pepsodent is a leading toothpaste brand of HUL and this is not the first time they have used Shahrukh. If I remember correctly we have seen him in bathtub taking bath with Lux soap. I am a guy… and watching SRK take a bath surrounded by several beauties endorsing a soap wasn’t my idea of enjoying an ad… I do not know any other HUL products endorsed by SRK, but this time they have had the right mix. They have rightfully used the talented Khan for what he can do. The kid has acted well… but SRK… as I have said earlier... Charms the hell out of you. Respect SRK... Respect.

Why... What... what not...

7 Reasons why I am writing this blog

1. I have always loved ads.
2. I am no expert, neither am I in the ad industry. But I just love and respect the shear quantum of creativity an ad makers put in a 30 sec clip (So the Passion about ads will drive this blog and not some commercial purpose)
3. Writing has always been a great stress buster for me.
4. I am prepping up for an exam which requires me to write creatively and this is my way of letting it out ;-)
5. I would love to hear and listen to other people’s views, comments and complements about what or how I write. It will make me a better writer (That means I welcome all the criticism on the grammar blunder I may have made)

6. I need to improve my grammar and some wise person has said - The best way you won’t make a mistake is when you have made it before (And I am not a man who takes chances)
7. Would like to share ideas with like-minded people.

7 Things you won’t find on this blog-

1. This is not a blog where we will discuss the advertisements as a subject of exam. It will not have information about what type of advertisements are there? What’s the history of advertisements and how it got evolved? Etc…
2. High school debates -whether ads are good or bad.
3. Obscene off color material, crude language, vulgarity.
4. Boring information about the author and his poetic, personal, spiritual experiences (like stories about my childhood, love life, injured friends, dying grandparents, severely painful (or pleasure some) break ups). It’s not FB. It will stick just to- “Folks… this is what I like/dislike and that’s my view… what say?”
5. Seductive, sensuous, sexy images/content. (I’m pretty sure you guys have your favorite sites for them.)
6. What I feel about weather.. hawayen.. fizaayen.. ghataayen. (In short- Kachara)
7. Hesitation in slandering an ad which is bakwaas! and scarcity of praises and accolades for an ad which I feel deserves its share of thumbs ups!
